Whakatane rests in the coastal heart of the Eastern Bay of Plenty where a mighty bluff rises above the Pacific Ocean to form a river mouth, boat harbour, spacious ocean beach, and fertile countryside.
Just an hour away, the cities of Rotorua and Tauranga with it's major export port are situated. The population numbers around 16,800 in the Whakatane township, and some 33,400 in the district as a whole.
Whakatane records the highest temperatures in New Zealand about 55 days of the year. Turn inland, and you're a short drive from the pristine bush and stretching walks of Whirinaki Forest and Te Urewera National Park, the third largest national park in New Zealand and the ancestral home of the Tuhoe people. |
